Car Engine Oil - Different kinds and importance

Living in the second decade of the 21st Century, we cannot even imagine our reality without a car. At least this is the case in the west modern world. The car is a necessity for the vast majority of us either for practical or status reasons or both. It is equally enjoyable, because there are many people for whom driving a luxury or high performance car is a way of living.

Engine oil is of great essence for the engine's longevity
In any way someone tries to understand the value of the car to modern society people there is a fact that applies to all cases. The car is a complex machine, nowadays every single model produced is a state-of-the-art technological achievement, and as all machines it requires proper maintenance in order to function properly. One of the basic things someone must keep in mind is how important engine oil is for the car to run smoothly and for a long time. Therefore understanding the importance of engine oil, the significance of appropriate oil changes and what kind of motor oil to choose are few very significant ‘chapters in the book’ of proper car maintenance.

Finding out and following the necessarily engine oil intervals, as instructed by each model’s manufacturer’s manual, its vital in keeping your car’s engine running up to its standards.

Engine oil is being used in order to lubricate the moving parts of the engine and also to keep them cool. The moving parts in this way are being kept safe from grinding against each other which eventually may cause their wear and damage.

Frequent oil changes enhance engine's
performance
Frequent engine oil changes are of great essence because they minimize the chances for dirt and sludge to build up in the engine. The longer the oil stays within the car’s system unchanged the greater the eventual damage this may cause to the car’s engine, because old dirty oil cannot provide to the same extent the lubrication standards as the new one does. After a certain point, dirty oil can cause serious engine damage, and in the worst case scenario this may even lead to a full engine replacement, not even considering the risk to the safety of the driver (high engine temperatures caused by old or lack of oil may cause fire to the engine in some cases) or the environment (old or lack of oil creates toxic fumes).

Fortunately enough, changing the oil doesn’t cost that much in order to put at risk your engine, yours and others safety, or the environment, not even mentioning the fine that you may end up paying for not respecting the environmental standards in case of a road check by the authorities.

Depending on the kind of vehicle you own, the frequency of changing engine oil varies usually between 3,000 to 5,000 miles (or 4,828 to 8,047 kilometres). It is wise though to check your manufacturer’s manual to be more precise and ask from the car mechanic to indicate you when is your next motor oil change due.

3 Basic types of engine oil

Even it may seem ironic, a great number of drivers don’t even know what type of engine oil they should fill in their car engines. Therefore, below you can find the three most popular ones that are used for cars.

Firstly though, you should know that a modern lubricant consists of a "base", a blended fluid which consists of dissolved and useful components 'additives' such as: antifriction additives, de-foamers, detergents etc. Each quality motor oil should be made of  a balanced, researched, proven and effective blend of additives. And by any means, you should always choose garages that are being supplied with quality engine oil wholesale from companies that produce engine oil and lubricants according to the highest standards, because fine quality engine oils are a result of lengthy researches and scientific tests. In any other case, you are putting in risk the safety of your engine in case you will prefer to buy an ‘unknown’ or white labelled engine oil just to save a couple of euro.

So, after this short warning, let’s see the three basic types of oil.

· Fully synthetic / 100% synthetic. Their oil base is manufactured in laboratory conditions and usually consists of esters, and other compounds (PAO). Their cost ranges between 10-20 euro/litre.
· Semi-synthetic / synthetic based / synthetic fortified. It is an attempt by companies to make good low cost oil, by mixing various oil bases. Usually it is a synthetic mixture of a 10% synthetic in a 90% mineral oil. Normally, these kind of engine oils provide three times better lubrication standards than those of a mineral oil, but only the half of that of a synthetic motor oil. Proportionally, their cost is too high for what they offer, with their cost ranging between 6-16 euro/litre (unfortunately the low production costs are not passed on to buyers)!
· Mineral. It is actually a form of crude oil and offers a low cost alternative but moderate fertilization and short lifespan. With modern cars being generally very sensitive, mineral oil should only be used only for oiling hinges on doors rather than someone filling his precious car engine with it! Their cost ranges between 2-5 euro/litre.
